Fortune favors the boldPosted: November 17, 2010
I receive a lot of e-mails from bands who want me to hear what they’ve created in the hopes that I will like it and write about it on the blog. I receive quite a bit of e-mails per day from different bands. In each e-mail, they send me their hopes and their dreams…or at least a good chunk of them. I become this voice of great reason with the power to propel or condemn these bands to greater heights or back to the hell from whence they came. It’s really rad.
In fear of getting too romantic, I will now get to my point. These e-mails are usually trying to ‘sell’ me a band, so the bands or PR agencies who work for the bands are required to use clever wording to try and entice me to give their mp3 or two a listen. I’m usually put off by these, and honestly, the last thing I want is for someone to try and sell me something. I like to think that I’m one for humble approaches. But even then, some bands play the sympathy card and that bothers me even more. So, what makes a great band pitch? Well, to be honest. It is one that catches the attention and sparks intrigue. If you can get me interested, you’re probably good to go for posting. Case in point: I received an e-mail a few days ago from someone called Anne and the subject of the e-mail was “WUZ CRACKIN PLAYAZ”. That’s it. That’s all it said. Well, “Hello!”, I thought to myself. “How do you do, e-mail?”, I asked. “I do fine, bitch”, it replied. Okay, I don’t know where I’m going with this. The point is, well, there’s two points. First, that is a bold move. Secondly, it wasn’t even a person named Anne. In fact, it was a band called Anne. A good shoegaze-ish band from Portland, Oregen called Anne. I pretty much took to their music like a moth to a flame. Hell, I’m still listening to it right now.
Anne – “Get It How You Live”
Definitely a contender for ‘favorite’.Anne – “All Your Time”
There are a few dings here and there in these recordingw but these songs show a lot of potential. Both come from their recently released mixtape which you can download from their website that I have linked below. There you will also find more fun stuff like demos and a music video.
Also of note, the band just signed with Austin’s Withdrawal Records and will be putting out a few 7″s next year. So, that’s awesome.
