Okay, I’m pretty sure I’m not alone on this.
The Get Up Kids shaped a good part of my life. Their beautiful music took hold of my heart for a good while and didn’t let go until my heart outgrew it. However, I know I can always return to it in times of greater nostalgia and rest assured that it feels like home to me. Given that I will always cherish their past, I am very wary when it comes to approaching their modern endeavors. For example, I didn’t even bother to touch their Simple Science EP.
So when I hear this new tune called “Shatter Your Lungs” that the band released from their upcoming fifth studio album, There Are Rules, I can’t help but be both skeptical and fucking surprised. Surprised, because this song doesn’t remind me of a damn thing they’ve ever recorded. However, at the same time, I’m not disappointed one bit. In fact, I’m impressed. This song is pretty good. So good, in fact, that I decided to delve into the other tracks from the album that are available online and was pleasantly surprised that these guys have managed to revive their sound in ways I wouldn’t have expected and am actually pretty thankful for. Take a listen to “Shatter Your Lungs” below. The Get Up Kids – Shatter Your Lungs
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you a prime example of the successful evolution of a band. There Are Rules is out January 25th on the band’s own Quality Hill Records. I can’t find a website for it, so here’s the band’s site below. I’m sure you can figure out how to buy it.
