The Photon God’s 2010: Songs

I listened to a lot of songs this year. I’m talking A LOT. A few stuck with me, a few didn’t. This list was hard to pin down. I’m pretty sure I’ve talked each and every one of my friends’ heads off about at least one of the songs on this list. I have a habit of going “HEY EVERYBODY, LISTEN TO THIS” when I hear something I really like. Sometimes my exclamations are met with indifference, sometimes they’re met with “Yeah, we know”s. Other times they’re met with “QUIT YELLING”s. Just the same, I love these songs. Feast your ears on

Photon God Mixtape Volume IV: Twang-g-g

At long last, I am finally posting the new blog mixtape! Consider this an early Christmas gift. Some of these bands I have yet to post about, some of these bands have already met my homepage. All in all, I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I did putting it together.

I’ve been playing guitar since I was seven years old. I’ve been playing an electric guitar since I was 12 years old. I still play today. One of the most fascinating things about an electric guitar is the range of sounds it makes when it’s out of tune. Traditionally, a guitar is played in tune. Songs have been written for thousands of years and for a small fraction of that time, which is still relatively large if you think about it, songs were written on guitars that were tuned a certain way. So, naturally, tuning is important; it provides the basis for creating sounds and arranging patterns of said sounds in ways that appeal to someone who is listening to them. (I don’t know of very many musicians that purposely arrange sounds in unappealing ways.)
However, I can’t explain how much of a kick I get out of striking my guitar’s strings when it’s horrifically out of tune. I’m not talking about them being so loose that they don’t vibrate fast enough to make sound, but just tight enough to resonate in the filthiest way possible. It always makes a noise that sounds vaguely but not entirely unlike “Twang”. I love that sound. The only sound I love more is when I put my guitar through a delay pedal that I bought off of a friend during the summer. “Twang” becomes “Twang-g-g”. “Twang-g-g”: the most beautiful sound on earth.

Carte Blanche

Do you think when an archaeologist digs up an old skull and holds it up, he sees a human head in his hands?

I’ve been listening to a lot of lo-fi music lately. Garage, pop, rock n roll, you name it. If it’s noisy, I will probably be into it right now. There’s just something incredibly satisfying about letting your ears float in an atmosphere full of noise. Letting it coat your ears; covering them in a protective layer of grime which allows them to fully appreciate the music surrounding them. Once you become comfortable listening to music that wasn’t recorded with the highest quality of microphones or studio equipment, or any at all for that matter, you are free to enjoy the great song that is left under all of the noise. It’s a taste that not many people can acquire, but if you are one of those that can, you have a great gift.
That being said, there’s a really noisy duo that I’ve been listening to a lot lately. They’re called ba babes and hail from Brooklyn. James Reilly on guitar, Michael Walsh on drums. They rock hard.
They have a four-track EP out that is aggressively titled Hate The Beach out now. You can download it for free at their Tumblr. One of the tracks off of the EP will be on the upcoming blog mixtape. Another is posted below. Check it out.ba babesNOllie Shuv
