The Photon God’s 2010: LPs & EPs

It’s often that you don’t get the same experience from listening to a single song that you do when you listen to an entire album. There’s a story being told that you miss out on when you listen to one or two random songs. If I like an album, I listen to it over and over until I digest it as best as I can. Each of these albums was there for me through thick and thin, through any kind of weather, through road trips, through heartbreak, through life, death, what have you. However, I’m tired of putting things in a numbered order. It doesn’t matter. Each of these records is amazing. I thought “this is the best record I’ve ever heard” while listening to each one of these albums. Putting them in a numbered list seems fucking ridiculous now. In no particular order:

This is my last list for LISTS WEEK. I am announcing here and now that I will be taking a break from the blog to regain whatever hours I’ve managed to shave off of my life from not sleeping. Call it a period of hibernation. I will be back sometime in January. Until then, if I don’t see you tonight or tomorrow, Happy Holidays!

Where I question Vampire Weekend with my feet on the ground

Someone at Pitchfork posted the track Vampire Weekend is contributing to the soundtrack for a bad movie. On this soundtrack the band is joined by many other great artists like Fanfarlo, Metric, Florence & The Machine, Band of Horses, Beck, and The Dead Weather.

Last time around, the soundtrack for this bad movie’s prequel was also dealt an indie-heavy hand. Whether this is a subtle move to wean the franchise’s fan-base into indie music or, instead, a plan to bring blossoming indie bands into the mainstream eardrum in a pathetic attempt to ‘blur’ the line between indie and mainstream culture is beyond me. However, one can remain as speculative as they wish and will do so until further notice.

This song is different. I can’t say I don’t like it because it will probably come back to haunt me later. I, like almost every other VW fan, have become familiar with their precisely-timed, quirky pop music and appreciate them for it. This song strays away from that sound almost as a whole. There are some elements on this song that I recognize from the band’s recent release, Contra, but they are horribly misrepresented on this song. I’m of the mind that the band takes a lot of time to practice and eventually perfect their songs. And if not the entire band, it’s Rostam at the reigns.

Honestly, this song sounds like what the band would do if they were locked in a room Saw-style and asked to write a song about vampires that adheres to the reverb-heavy pop format that’s holding sway right now. The band, not really being ‘cut of the same cloth’ as the bands they’ve been asked to emulate, try their best to retain some integrity by adding some VW songwriting mainstays: string arrangements, something that I want to say sounds like a mandolin, and a recent addition to the family, what I like to call ‘The Epic Bell Part’ (see: Cousins).

I’m sure if the band was asked to write a song around the same time the actors were cast for the film, their contribution would be more substantial and memorable as a whole. I’m not saying that the band has lost their touch in any way, nor am I saying that this song is a metaphorical ‘bump’ in their metaphorical ‘road’ (see: career). I’m not even going to be a jerk and claim that it is in fact an experience far more similar to driving over an uncovered manhole on a freshly-paved road with your new car.

Nope. I’m just going to let it speak for itself. See if you agree.

If you feel the same way, have a look at their new music video for the song “Holiday” here. It is both ten times more ridiculous and entertaining and will make you feel better. It might also make you long for a coastline.

Review: Vampire Weekend's Contra

Vampire Weekend has grown. They might be Vampire Fortnight by now.

Their second full-length album, Contra, is still carrying the band’s creative torch just a little over two years after their self-titled debut was released. With their debut, they established themselves as an entirely unique band. Their simple but elegant song structure has this habit of burying itself in the back of our heads. It’s almost magical.

Thankfully, the magic hasn’t gone. Contra brings us back to the wonderful world where primary songwriters Ezra Koenig and Rostam Batmanglij’s collective creative subconscious takes physical form. However, something feels different. Mature, even. Yes, the worldly beats are there and the keyboards are dancing around with the bass lines in their usual funky trance but the impression that I get from these songs is one of a band that is evolving. Koenig’s vocals, seemingly sporadic as they may be, ring strongly, deeply, and with the confidence of the kind of person who’s ‘been there’. The playful falsettos on “I Think You’re A Contra” and “White Sky” are unmistakably some of the most powerful parts of this album. Now, the lyrics. Ezra’s clever wordplay and brilliant, ‘how-the-hell?’-type rhyme schemes bring us back to the wonderfully-paranoid end of speculative appreciation. In other words, we sing these words whether we understand them at first or not; surely entranced by the band’s music. However, while the band does write soft, heart-to-heart odes to youth and confusion, they also have the undeniable ability to make you want to have unbelievable amounts of fun. Of course, the perfect example of this at work is the energetic first single, “Cousins”. This song is a strong burst of energetic musicianship. Bassist Chris Baio is picking a mile a minute, drummer Christopher Tomson is relentless on the snare, and both Ezra and Rostam weigh in with quite possibly the catchiest riff they’ve ever written.

All in all, the efforts put forth in this album are spectacular. A true work of art, Contra is probably going to be one of the best albums of this year. To paraphrase Neil Armstrong, Vampire Weekend was one small step for man. Contra is a much wider step for Vampire Weekend.

New Vampire Weekend video: Cousins

Vampire Weekend have released the video for the second single from their upcoming album, Contra.

The song is called “Cousins”. The video is amazing. From a filmmaker’s perspective, which I am lucky enough to have, it is a creative production that I wish that I had been a part of.

It’s on the front page of their website. Click the image above to go there.
